Improvements to AP Capacity Predictions

At Preseem, we’re always looking to improve our predictive capabilities. One feature operators love is our Access Point Subscriber Capacity number in the Plus tier. It takes local conditions into account, as well as the typical behavior of a subscriber during the ISP’s Peak Busy Hour, and returns a number that is a reasonable estimate of how much capacity remains expressed as subscribers.

The Subscriber Capacity prediction has proven to be accurate for busier APs. However, for an idle AP with only one or two subscribers, it’s harder to predict precisely how much capacity more subscribers would use.

We’ve released an improvement to the underlying algorithm, specifically targeting APs that don’t have much usage. Simplified, APs that are idle will have their predictions calibrated using the AP behavior model collected across all Preseem customers.

As the AP grows busier over time, we rely increasingly on local conditions—a blended, continuous curve requiring no hand-tuning. With this new algorithm in place, Preseem customers can more accurately understand the subscriber capacity of their entire network for busy APs and new ones with few subscribers.

To recap, we’re improving Available Subscriber Capacity values to be more accurate on idle APs, helping you find more areas of your network with capacity to sell. This benefits sales and marketing, allowing overall network capacity calculations to be hyper-targeted and precise, increasing your operational efficiency!

Public API for AP and CPE details and scores

Preseem is pleased to announce the availability of the Access Point and CPE Radio score APIs. These APIs enable Preseem's unique scores and subscriber capacity values to be integrated with other systems and used for data analysis.

The APIs use the same authentication mechanism as before. Scores and trends are currently updated once per 24 hours. Note that Plus features are a superset of Essentials features, so not all columns will be available in the Essentials tier.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Mikrotik Essentials and Plus Support Improvements

Preseem will be changing support requirements for Mikrotik APs on Monday, April 8, 2024. We’ll be requiring read-only API access from the Preseem poller. This is necessary to provide accurate Essentials link rates, airtime consumption, and Auto AP Capacity (in some configurations), and AP Subscriber Capacity for Plus.

No action is required if you don’t have any Mikrotik APs.

If you do have Mikrotik APs, check your email for more detailed instructions on what is required on your end. In brief, follow the Element Credentials guide, and secondly, configure Mikrotik APs for API access. Don’t forget to notify Preseem support when done.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

New Routers Feature Available in Preseem

Preseem now shows network routers in the Network/Routers view. These are routers at network sites that are polled by Preseem for mapping IP addresses to services and network topology, which is required in some Preseem deployments.

This centralized view gives you an at-a-glance overview of all routers in your network that Preseem is polling, with metrics for each. You can see the health and status of each Router across all Sites, and by drilling into a router, you can see charts of its port metrics over time.

The Status card at the top of the screen can be used to quickly filter the results, and column headers can be used to sort and filter the list of routers. You can use this to make sure Preseem is functioning properly. For example:

  • Make sure all routers you expect Preseem to be polling are on this list. If a router is missing, it may not be provisioned in Preseem or it may not have SNMP enabled.
  • Look for any routers in an Offline state. Preseem is no longer able to poll these routers.
  • Look for any routers in an Error state. Preseem is having issues polling these, and you can drill into the Router Details to see the details of the error.

Please try it out and let us know if you have any questions.

Single Sign-On Added to Preseem

It’s here!

We’re happy to let you know that single sign-on (SSO) with Google and Microsoft is now available for all customers.

To log in with SSO, please ensure the email address on your profile matches your auth provider. You can update your email address in Preseem in the “Manage Your Account” area (top right corner).

Domain-Based Authentication

Along with SSO, Preseem now also supports controlling which authentication mechanisms are allowed on a per-domain basis, making managing many user accounts easier and safer.

For example, if your company uses Google Workspace with example.com, Preseem can be configured only to accept logins for example.com via Google Authentication. Now, you no longer need to worry about disabling accounts in Preseem when staff leave your organization.

This new functionality makes it easier to manage new team members, too! Preseem can be configured to automatically create accounts when users at your configured domain successfully authenticate via the chosen authentication providers.

To have domain-wide authentication enabled, please reach out to our support team via the in-app chat with the following details:

  • The domain name
  • The authentication providers to enable for the domain. Choose from:

    • Preseem username and password
    • Google
    • Microsoft
  • If automatic new account creation should be enabled for the domain

  • Move from a CPE Radio to the Access Point
  • Jump from a Service to the associated CPE Radio
  • Navigate from an Account to its Services, and more

Please try it out and let us know if you have any feedback.
